I have been using Linux for decades and Unix from a 360kb floppy install from the 80's.
Anyone that spends the necessary time and effort to learn Linux and the command line will never go back to Windows fully again.
Anyone that complains about Linux in anyway that dismisses Linux OS's, is just a basic GUI user that never spent the time using the command line.
Of course Linux OS can't run PC games. So use your PC Windows OS for games and what ever else gets you excited.
For C/C++ programming Linux is the way to go.
It seems that every Linux distro now comes default with thousands of programs that are illegal in many countries and with a little study enable you to hack into almost anything.
I prefer OpenSUSE because it does whatever I want it to and is the perfect OS for a laptop trying to connect to wireless networks on the go.
I wonder how many people know that all a GUI is.......is the front end for the command line. Indeed every program and application ends up with a command in the command prompt.
Enjoy your use of Linux and go to the many web blog devoted to Linux when you have a problem and you will learn eventually how to set everything up.
blessings,
chetang

Re: Linux Os's
Thanx for your advise Chetang
I started with computers before windows was really big (I think 3.1 had just come out) so I am used to command lines .........if you say DOS to some people .....they say what is DOS ???.........most people here should know what it is
I used to set up my own menu's with a menu system called.......Quick menu..... all the buttons had to be set up with command lines and evenually when finished the computer had it's own GUI
It wasn't all point and click (as with todays computers)....all the command line had to be entered
I used to show it to my friends when I had finished it ....and then of coarse they would want it....anyway thats history
I am still getting used to the Linux commands tho.......I guess that they will make sense when I learn more about them

I have been testing another Linux Os called bodhi 0.1.6....the newest version is only 470 meg in size and runs very quickly and will run from a live cd
Here is a screen shot (note there is no taskbar or start menu ...all you do is left click anywhere on the screen to bring up the start menu )

Thanx for the reply .......Ubuntu seems to be the order of the day ....I am just trying my hand at Linux and just seeing what is available and what is best suited for older pc's

I have been testing a new Linux Os called Chameleon.....it is called this coz you can change the Os style at the click of the mouse
This is the Os as standard

Next is Windows 7 just by a mouse click

Next is the Mac option ....again with a mouse click

So in short you can run this Os as Linux ....Win7....or Apple Mac .....very clever

Re: Linux Os's
i am using UBUNTU 10.10 Maverik Meercat along with windows 7 (in two different partitions in my laptop)..........
well Ubuntu works fine for me (as I am using it to learn C programming too) but there's one problem i am really stressed of: this wonderful OS sucks the battery so soon.....in comparision to windows 7 which lasts for about 3 and a half hours on a single charge, my laptop survives only about 1 and a half hour while using Ubuntu.....
that's something i have never been able to figure out..........
else it works fantastic....in fact i am loving it

Nice work ....you may need to try some setting changes in Ubuntu and see if that stops the drain on your battery (as to what changes ...I'm not sure)......I couldn't get into Ubuntu although more Linux Os's are Ubuntu based

Re: Linux Os's
@johnyaar
it might have something to do with the software. Most laptops these days come with software that makes them more efficient whilst on battery power. For instance my acer has 2 software bits whilst using windows that limit the cpu usage and cd rom drive speed + graphics is changed from the ati radeon to the on-board one, this will greatly increase battery life. the problem with this is that the software only works on windows, so basically what im saying is that it is not the OS but rather where the power is going. As fredpc said, you should be able to counter this by changing some setting within ubuntu.
