Linux Xubuntu on USB stick problem

Post by Möbius »

I have been wanting to try Linux for a while and have not managed successfully yet to get it running in a V/Box as it runs so slow (if at all) and don't fancy a triple boot system. So I decided to make a USB 'boot' Xbuntu stick with Unetbootin 583.

I managed to get the system running, YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS! success :D

But, after ejecting the stick and rebooting after the session, I got a Windows message saying something along the lines of "Chkdsk had found 'F' parameter to be corrupted and cant continue" after finding three corrupt files & after running for about 5 seconds. There was also a warning about 'data loss' in Application Data, temporary files. But I was dammed if I could catch that last warning, as it flashed up so quickly and went.

Serious?
Well I ran the chkdsk repair and 'fixed' the problem after about an hour. I then checked my HD with HD Sentinel (THANKS TO CC), everything was fine.
Back to normal then........?

Now I'm a little worried that if I put the stick back in it will do the same thing (Oh yes, unfortunately I am using a SanDisk Cruzer 8g USB, it is documented that Linux has problems with this type of USB), SanDisk, spanner in the works huh? Typical.

I should point out that my system has worked faultlessly since the hiccup. Fingers crossed.

My questions (4) are;

After running Linux from a USB, can this cause system instability in Windows?

If I get around to getting a different USB stick and load Linux onto it (should the problem actually lie with the stick itself) how do/can I get Linux to work permanently on a USB?

As far as I can tell, the "Try Linux" mode is a 'live' session and you cant or it wont (at least I cant) save any files and folders once you leave the system and boot back into the original W7 setup. Can I install a permanent Linux OS on my pen drive? And if I "install" Linux after booting from the USB, will it install on my PC rather than on the USB?

All I want to do is fiddle around with Linux, as I am curious, but I don't want to kill the cat.

I am sure someone here can put me in the right direction.

Cheers!

1. No

2/3/4 If your using Unetbootin you can chose to reserve some space which saved files will be written to, so that each time you boot from the live stick, you can access those files. (there is a little box you can tick). What you can do is boot from a live CD (for instance) and then chose to install to your USB instead of your HDD, which will install just as it would on an HDD ....this might be a better option for you, if you wish to save your files and access them at a later date (it will also run quicker then using the LIVE option).

if you have any more questions, i'm here for ya mate.

So.
As far as a shortsighted person can see..........

I burn the Xbuntu 'Try' to an ISO DVD (Live)and when I go to install, the target is the USB?

Dear me, how easy is that? I was buggerd if I could find a solution. Talk about not using your head......

burn the ISO to a CD/DVD (rewritable so nothing goes to wast) boot from the cd/dvd into the LIVE session, then chose to install (and yes the targed would be the USB stick)
