I have always stayed away from the Ubuntu flavors as they came late to the linux game and are the windows style distro's.

OpenSUSE or Fedora are my distro's of choice along with the other command line distro's that most forget about.

Linux has come a long way. For instance I no longer have to create my own wireless drivers which we had to do from early 2000 to 2008 or so.

The rule of thumb is don't do the update to new kernel for about a year and pay attention to that disto's forum for talk about performance and bugs.

I prefer stable to bug ridden and not fun to use.
